Interview with Brian Peck, January 1, 1970

Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Brian Peck Peck first served in Bilengui, Gabon, as an aqua extension agent in a remote region of the country. He introduced the construction of fish ponds to raise fish to harvest for villagers, particularly tilapia. There, he also introduced new vegetables into the diet, including cucumbers, as well as a means of collecting rain water using bamboo gutters. At the completion of his 2 years, he extended his service working with the World Wildlife Fund in Sette Cama, along the coast where he was involved in national park conservation. The data he collected there was used in land management studies: water quality, habitat management, fishing practices and sea turtle surveys. Peck’s service was “life-changing,” and led him to a career in wildlife protection and conservation.
