Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Gina Soscia served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Paraguay, from 2007 to 2009, as a municipal services development volunteer. While attending Temple University, Gina studied abroad in Spain. The experience was life changing, and gave her a greater interest in other cultures. She applied to the Peace Corps Masters International Program, and completed some coursework at Rutgers University before being selected for Paraguay group G-24. Gina’s training, included Spanish and Guarani language, was conducted in Guarambare and J. A. Saldívar, outside of Asunción, Paraguay. Gina was assigned to work with the Municipalidad de Capitán Miranda, a town in the department of Itapúa. Her job was to build on environmental improvement and education work begun by previous PCVs. Gina eagerly adopted the culture, sharing food and drink, and developing close friendships. She traveled throughout Paraguay, including the Gran Chaco region in the western Paraguay. After completing her service Gina traveled to other countries in South America before returning home and completing her masters degree in Public Policy and Administration. She currently works at the Environmental Protection Agency.
