Interview Summary

In this interview, Aligarh Muslim University professor Masood ul Hasan begins with a discussion of the sports available at Aligarh Muslim University, including hockey, cricket, and horseback riding, as well as swimming. He then talks about the student and administrative structure of the university, including the student-held positions such as food monitor and hall monitor. Hasan then delves into daily life at the university, including information on the hostels, the food available, and the classes available. He talks about the theology classes required of both Shiite and Sunnite students, as well as language courses and history courses. Next, Hasan discusses how he spent his free time as a student, including activities such as sports, visiting cafes, and going to movie theaters. Hasan briefly talks about how the university handled discipline issues, before talking at length about the friends that he made while attending. Hasan talks about his involvement in the Aligarh Students? Union, lamenting the fact that he feels the union has lost its traditions. He also talks about how the expense of holding an office kept him from assuming a leadership position. Hasan then discusses the Aligarh Student Union?s involvement in the Pakistan movement, as well as his personal distaste for the movement. Finally, Hasan ends the interview by recounting the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi, which occurred when he was traveling by train between Bhopal (India) and Aligarh (India).
