Interview Summary

Alexis (Lex) Rieffel served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in India from 1965 to 1967. Lex joined the Peace Corps after applying to graduate school and the Peace Corps at the end of his military service. He deferred graduate school after telling the Peace Corps that he would only go to India, a country that was the subject of his senior thesis in college. His younger brother was a volunteer in Colombia at the same time. Lex served in the agriculture sector to work on modern poultry keeping. En route to India fighting broke out on India’s border with Pakistan. Harris Wofford arranged to send his group to Israel for five weeks until the fighting stopped. In addition to his poultry work, Lex pursued a few small industry and family planning projects.
