Interview with Darla Gonson, January 28, 2022

Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Darla grew up in rural Indiana. She received a B.A. in accountancy from Ball State. Darla was working for Deloitte when she applied to the Peace Corps and was invited to Malawi. Darla’s training group of professionals had an abbreviated six-week pre-service training program given the national language was English. She was a lecturer at the College of Accountancy in Lilongwe. Her college provided housing for her and other British, Japanese, and UNESCO faculty. Her workday was quite stable over two years. She taught four classes a day on business law, communication, accountancy, and computer programs. While not having teaching experience, she learned to slow down, talk slower, listen to student feedback, and have patience. Living under a dictatorship meant there were restrictions on reading materials, dress codes, and talking about politics and the administration. Darla was fascinated with the vastness of the country, wonderful people, and accepting of refugees. Malawi, August 1989 to August 1991, Education Sector
