Interview with C. Oran Little, May 30, 2002

Project: C. Oran Little Oral History Project

Interview Summary

C. Oran Little continues describing the Six Year Review in 1994. He recalls that just at the time that they were trying to get Ag 2000, a program for economic development, started, budget problems became an issue. Little states that they began a large grant application program, and by 1994, they were the eight largest USDA grant recipient. Little describes the process of both raising money for the Gluck Center, and building the new facility. He discusses Mike Ritchie's work on this project as a professional fund raiser. Little talks about how he views fund raising as giving people an opportunity to invest in the future. He recalls using football tickets and holding alumni meetings in Florida to entice donors. Little discusses a scholarship banquet which allowed donors to meet the students who benefited from their support. He also talks about the biotech program. During Little's second year as Dean of the College of Agriculture, the purpose of the extension system was questioned. He describes the plan to modernize cooperative extension, and recalls working with local leaders on decisions regarding extension. He talks about how they needed to increase the number of youth agents and raise the salaries for county agents. He comments on the separation between the University of Kentucky and the community colleges, and the role of the Extension Service and President Wethington in this debate. Little also mentions agricultural programs in Kentucky's community colleges.
