Interview Summary
Sophia Couch was born in l889 on Short Creek in Leslie County. She relates her grandfather's encounter with Native Americans in Harlan and her grandmother's experiences with wolves and a panther. Couch describes the log home of her grandparents and indicates that her grandmother baked in the fireplace without a stove. When Couch was very young, there were no churches in the area, and she did not know what a church was. She recalls dances with banjo music and also tells two "haint" tales or ghost stories associated with people she has known. Couch's husband helped to build Wendover in the 1920s.Interview Accession
