Interview Summary

Smith was the first Center Director of the Cispus Job Corps Civilian Conservation Center located in the Gilford Pinchot National Forest, Lewis County, Washington responsible for the operation of the center starting in June 1965. He was interviewed for the center director by a committee that included Sargent Shriver who was the first Director of the Office of Economic Opportunity. Prior to his appointment to the Cispus Center, Smith was a district ranger on the Okanogan National Forest. During the remainder of his career, he served as a forest supervisor in the Office of the Chief of the United States Forest Service (USFS) and retired from his position of USFS Region-5 Regional Forester.
