Interview with Kate Lorig, April 23, 2021
Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project
Interview Summary
As a new nurse, Kate Lorig was a Peace Corps health volunteer in Chile, 1964-1967, and worked in Peru in 1970 in earthquake relief. Lorig spent 2 months training prior to arriving in Santiago, Chile. She was sent to Valdivia, Chile where she was tasked by Chilean Health Services with working in the local hospital or in public health. Lorig chose the latter and spent her days in a clinic, where she supervised student nurses from the nearby university and did home visits. Because Lorig was known to Peace Corps as a Spanish-speaker, she was asked to help with Peruvian earthquake relief in 1970. She arrived in Lima and was told to “go north and do good.” She spent a month performing basic first aid in a remote mountain village. Lorig credits Peace Corps as a “seminal experience” in her health career and as “the opportunity of a lifetime.”Interview Accession
