Interview Summary

David Day served in the Peace Corps in the agriculture sector in Kenya from 1965-1966 and India from 1967-1968. Acceptance into Peace Corps was quite competitive then. In 1963, Day took a Peace Corps exam, completed a 16-page application, supplied several references, and underwent a background check. Once accepted, Day trained in Wisconsin where he learned Swahili. His assignment in Kenya in the Ministry of Land Settlement was 120 miles north of Nairobi. There, he worked on an agricultural fair to celebrate national unity, a cow inoculation project, and a hydraulic water project. After returning stateside, Day was offered an opportunity to go to India. He learned Hindi-Urdu in the U.S. and India. He was assigned to a village in northern India where his goal was to enhance food production. There, he introduced hybrid seeds and a bee-keeping project. Day has many stories about the various people he met.
