Interview with Tetiana Illiuk Kidruk, August 30, 2021

Project: Peace Corps: Host Country National Oral History Project

Interview Summary

This is an interview with Tetiana Illiuk Kidruk, Ukrainian Peace Corps Counterpart 2015-2017. Tetiana Kidruk was the only volunteer out of all the staff in her Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) in Rivne who spoke English, so she was sent to the orientation for PCV counterparts representing that organization. She was supposed to “bring back the Volunteer after the 3-day introduction to Peace Corps.” With the Volunteer, she helped the NGO be more consistent. When the Volunteer left for another NGO, she accompanied him. There they helped write a mission statement and a statement of organizational values, introduced project management, fund-raising techniques, and organizational structuring. As a result of these experiences, Kidruk was “empowered:” “All good things come from Peace Corps.” Kidruk studied in Kansas as a Fulbright Scholar, and, now, manages a local community organization. Others in the NGO’s benefited from having a Volunteer by learning to take a systematic approach to work. Kidruk suggests that future Volunteers learn about business, governmental and non-governmental practices in Ukraine before service, and learn to let Ukrainians make mistakes. Kidruk has served as a Language and Cross-Cultural Facilitator in Peace Corps Ukraine
