Interview with Deborah Harkrader, August 8, 2021

Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Deborah Harkrader served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Ecuador, 1984-86. At Prescott College, she studied five months in Peru for her Cultural Studies undergraduate degree. She trained in Quito, with 40 trainees. Deborah's assignment was as a water promoter, at the Instituto Ecuatoriano de Obras Sanitarias (IEOS, the Ecuadorian Institute of Sanitary Projects) in Cotopaxi province. She lived in Isinliví helping bring potable water and latrines to the village in a record 5 months. After a few smaller projects, IEOS workers went on strike halting all projects. Deborah was then sent to San Cristóbal, Galápagos, for a Special Project renovating a small natural history museum, with some funding from the U.S. Ambassador. Post Peace Corps, Deborah worked as a Naturalist Guide in Galápagos for several years; she then studied at Duke and UNC-Chapel Hill to obtain a Master's degree in Environmental Management and Protection.
