Interview Summary

In this interview, DiMartino his upbringing in New York and the many Jazz influences from his early life. DiMartino's mom was a waitress and his dad worked at Lockheed aircraft, but would take him along to dance and perform with the American Legion Band. In high school, DiMartino's teacher, Mrs. Burls, encouraged him to apply to the Eastman School of Music. His school flew him out to audition and he was accepted into the school, where he got both his Bachelors and Masters degrees. The connections he made at the Eastman School of Music lead him to teach at the University of Kentucky. Though DiMartino is now retired, he continues to teach and inspire students around Kentucky, and abroad. DiMartino credits Holroyd for a lot of the successful teaching methods he has picked up through the years.
