Interview Summary
Fred Joseph discusses in great detail his family history and genealogy. He talks about their immigration to America from various places in Germany. He describes their history once they arrived in America, including their many accomplishments, specifically in the field of architecture. He discusses his childhood growing up in a Baptist community in Louisville, Kentucky. He talks about his family's Jewish traditions, his parents' involvement in the Jewish community, and his experiences with anti-Semitism. He discusses his inspiration for his work in the field of civil rights, which led to his work with Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and other forms of activism. He discusses his education at Wesleyan University and University of Michigan Law School before his career with the Office of Economic Opportunity (OEO) and as civil rights counsel for the House Judiciary. He discusses the integration of Jefferson County public schools and litigating a case for the ACLU in Louisville.Interview Accession
