Interview Summary

L.L. "Jay" Schwall first came to the University of Kentucky in 1950, left the university to join the Navy in 1951, and returned to UK in 1956. He talks about how the university changed during his absence and his first impressions of the campus. He talks about majoring in civil engineering and discusses his classes and favorite professors. He talks about joining the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, and discusses other social events, activities, and local hangouts. He talks about politics, both national and on campus. He discusses the role of women and African Americans at the University of Kentucky. He talks about the influence of the campus newspaper, the Kentucky Kernel.

Schwall talks about athletics at the university, including football teams and players, basketball teams and players, and the relationship between the two teams. He discusses how his college experiences affected his life and talks about his participation in the UK Alumni Association.
