Interview Summary

Genia Peterson?owner of the Smoky Mountain Diner, a long-time Hot Springs institution?is one of the only born-and-bred Hot Springs residents who has section-hiked the Appalachia Trail. Here, she recalls her late father, the "Slingshot Preacher" with whom she bought and ran the restaurant with before he passed. Hospitality, kinship and charity are a focal point of Peterson's narration, with remembrances of growing up in the Hot Springs community. We learn about values instilled by her father, and her continuation of service to the communities?both that of the small town and the hikers passing through?through her youth group and and diner outreach.
