Interview Summary

Katherine Kinderman was a volunteer with the Volunteers In Service to America in the Appalachian region in the 1960s. In this interview she discusses how she became involved with community action and how the poverty program in her area became a political movement. She talks about how the VISTA workers saw themselves and how others in the community felt about them. She discusses the claim that the outside volunteers were manipulating the local people. She talks about how her involvement with the VISTA program affected her life and whether she believes another social movement could happen in the future.
