Interview Summary

Severa Miyares Jacobs is the daughter of Charles Manuel Miyares. Known on the racing circuit as “Cuban Charlie,” Charles immigrated from Havana in 1925 at the age of 23. In this interview Mrs. Jacobs shares memories of her father and his long career as a groom as well as his specialty in the field. She speaks of his character in relationship to his goals, perseverance and the legacy he left his family. She also relates his citizenship effort and speaks to how he was treated because he was an African American with an unusual accent.
