Project: American Veterans: World War Two Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Dr. Alvin C. Poweleit was a surgeon in the 192nd Tank Battalion. He argues that his battalion, which delayed the Japanese in the Philippines, was responsible for preventing the invasion of Australia and New Zealand. The battalion eventually surrendered, and Poweleit describes his "hell ship" voyage to a prisoner-of-war camp. He also recalls conversations with General Douglas MacArthur and an unnamed Japanese general.Interview Accession
