Interview Summary

Charles Llewellyn served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Ecuador from 1973 through 1975 in the Health Program. After graduating from Hampton-Sydney College, Llewellyn traveled to South America. In his travels, he met Peace Corps Volunteers and the Ecuador Associate Peace Corps Director. These chance encounters led to him volunteering. Training in Quito included Spanish language and local culture. His assignment was in Cuenca, and the nearby village of Déleg, training local health promoters. A secondary project involved working with the Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO) surveying NGO healthcare activities in remote locations. In the late months of his service, Llewellyn learned of a hospital development project in Sorata, Bolivia that he was interested in working with. In order to make that possible, he took an early termination from Peace Corps so he could raise the funds required to support his volunteering in Bolivia. Llewellyn later earned a Master of Public Health degree and went on to a career in International Public Health with USAID.
