Interview with Gary T. Bank, October 8, 2021

Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Gary T. Bank served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Kenya, from 1995 through 1997, in the Education Sector. Gary heard about Peace Corps while in high school, but didn’t apply until many years later. He served in the Navy during the Viet Nam era, in the Coast Guard for 20 years, and completed graduate school before applying to Peace Corps. Training was conducted in Naivasha, Kenya. It included health, culture, teaching skills, and Swahili language. Gary’s first assignment was at Kerio Valley Secondary School. Due to unsatisfactory housing at Kerio, Peace Corps moved him to a school in Metkei. He completed his first year there, and has many good memories of the time. His second year was spent teaching at a school near Lake Victoria. Gary credits his Peace Corps experience with giving him a broader global perspective, and leading him to continue volunteering. Since Peace Corps, he has traveled with Discover Corps and NPCA’s Next Step Travel to Guatemala, Belize, Costa Rica, and Ecuador. He has been a member of the Minnesota RPCV group, coordinating community service activities.
