Interview Summary

Alfred Powell, a friend of Happy Chandler, begins the interview by describing how he met Chandler. Powell then talks of the baseball team that he played on and Chandler managed in Eastern Kentucky. Powell also characterizes his friendship with Chandler after their stint together on the baseball team. Chandler's personality is then discussed, as well as his tendency to rely on his friends often. Chandler's accomplishments and controversies during his two terms as governor are explored. Chandler's time spent as Commissioner of Baseball is also mentioned. The interviewee details the educational policies of Governor Chandler. The 1963 failed bid for governor of Chandler is discussed. The impact of TV on this campaign is examined. Powell illustrates his friendship with Chandler since his retirement from politics. Powell articulates what sort of legacy Chandler has left behind, especially as governor. To conclude the interview, Chandler's habits as a friend and politician are considered.
