Interview Summary

Darryl Chappell served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Costa Rica from 1991 to 1993 in the Small Business Program. Darryl credits his parents and community upbringing with instilling core values, such as giving back, that led him to volunteering. After earning a degree in Business, Darryl worked in the insurance industry as an analyst and then a manager for four years, but felt the call to serve others internationally. Training in Costa Rica was conducted in El Coyol, Alajuela. It included Spanish language and living with a local family. Darryl was assigned to Ciudad Quesada, San Carlos. His primary job was to design and implement business processes at an agricultural cooperative (Coope San Carlos). Secondary projects included creating a pricing system for a grocery store, teaching English at an Italian owned resort, and setting up a research resource center for the Peace Corps office in San Jose. After completing his service, Darryl earned Master’s Degrees in Business Administration and later in International Relations. He founded the Darryl Chappell Foundation, empowering Afrodescendant artists to achieve their highest potential. At the time of this interview, Darryl lives in Montevideo Uruguay.
