Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Dawn "Bean" Borel served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Kazakhstan from 2009 to 2011 in the Education Program. Dawn and her then husband applied to Peace Corps after she graduated from Northeastern State University in Oklahoma. They were selected to serve with cohort Kaz-21. Training was conducted in Esik, near Almaty. Training included Russian language, culture, safety, and vocational skills. Dawn was assigned to teach at School 21 in Aktobe, a town in the northwest, near the Russian border. In addition to teaching English she initiated secondary projects that included a cooking club, movie club, and volunteering. The volunteer project, Old Friends, received funding from a US. Embassy grant. Dawn and fellow PCVs organized a Camp GLOW event, and an English camp for underprivileged kids. Dawn developed close friendships with fellow volunteers, host country staff, and people she worked with. She was able to visit Kazakhstan again if 2014. Dawn remains very interested in helping others and travel. She hopes to volunteer for Peace Corps again when her children are grown.
