Interview Summary

This interview with Dr. Anthony T. Padovano was conducted in Louisville in 2015. Considered by many as an expert on Merton, and interviewed by Atkinson in 2006 for the first documentary on Merton, Padovano was in Louisville in 2015 to deliver a talk on Thomas Merton at Bellarmine University.

Dr. Padovano is professor of American literature and religious studies at Ramapo College in New Jersey and is adjunct professor of theology at Fordham University in New York City. He holds a doctoral degree in theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome and a Ph.D. in English language and literature from Fordham University. Since 1988 he has been the president of COR-PUS, a national organization of four thousand members working for ministerial reform in the Catholic Church. An author of twenty-five books, Padovano has devoted critical research to the thought of Thomas Merton. In addition to The Human Journey: Thomas Merton, Symbol of a Century (1982), and an audiotape of twenty-four lectures on Merton entitled Thomas Merton: A Life for Our Times (1988), he has also authored a one-actor play, available on videotape, Winter Rain (1985), in which Michael Moriarity portrays Thomas Merton.
