Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Marian Rivman served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Philippines from 1966-68. She discusses enjoying living on a college campus and dorm life during training in Cambridge and the group being subjects for a PhD thesis on personality change during Peace Corps service. She discusses her first assignment teaching science in Tacurong, difficulties with her home placement and political violence in the community from which she was moved. She also discusses her second placement in Davao City where she worked with a nonprofit organization helping squatters displaced by logging interests get jobs and starting handicraft projects. She discusses multi-generational contacts with one family, returning numerous times to the Philippines and a serendipitous connection with her Peace Corps language instructor at the UN’s Conference on Women. She discusses the profound impact Peace Corps service had on her personal and professional life. She also discusses activities with the New York City Peace Corps Association.
