Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Carrie Slater Duffy served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Latvia from 1999 to 2001, in the education program. After college she was interested in Teaching English as a Foreign Language abroad. She’d previously lived in England and tutored immigrants. Peace Corps service aligned with her interest. Carrie was selected for Latvia training group 8. They trained in Yermila, a suburb of Riga. Carrie was assigned to Andreas Ubisha Vidus Scuola in Skriveri. She tried to introduce critical thinking in her lessons. In addition to teaching, she started an English club for students and adults. Along with other PCVs she organized and hosted an international youth conference, hosting about 120 youths from Latvia, Lithuania,Estonia, and Russia. The camp included education on reproductive health, drugs, and alcohol, as well as sports activities. Carrie’s Peace Corps service led her to pursue a career in the environmental sector.
