Interview with Andrea Catalano, May 25, 2023

Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Andrea Catalano served in Honduras, 2008-2012, as a health trainer. PC shaped her life both personally (she married a Honduran) and professionally (her profession is public health). Her permanent site was El Negrito. There she had two counterparts. One was World Vision, a Canadian NGO, and the other was the local health center. Her work was largely conducting training workshops—e.g., on nutrition, HIV prevention, and baby-weighing. Andrea extended six months to work on a PEPFAR grant and a task force creating a national health training manual. She extended for an additional year in Comayagua where she worked with sex workers and an HIV support group. Andrea advises those joining PC to think about why they're going. She is critical of volunteers who do not view the experience seriously and respectfully. PC taught her we’re all connected, how to roll with the punches and how to be comfortable being uncomfortable.
