Interview with Brian Redmond, September 13, 2023

Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Brian Redmond served as a Peace Corps volunteer in the Dominican Republic from 1969 to 1976. Originally from Detroit, Michigan, he applied for the Peace Corps while he was finishing up his Master’s Degree in Geology from Michigan State University. He was originally offered positions in Ethiopia and then Peru, for which he attended three months of training in Puerto Rico. Upon completion of training he was sent back to the US due to a lack of Spanish fluency. However, he was soon assigned to the Dominican Republic and to the Instituto Nacional de Aguas Potables y Alcantarillados (INAPA) agency where he spent the next few years drilling for water to develop wells and aqueducts. He met his wife, Lois, also a PCV, in the DR and they ended up getting married on the lawn of the Peace Corps office. After completion of service, Brian became a professor of Geology and Chemistry at Wilkes University in Pennsylvania.
