Interview Summary

This interview with Vice-Admiral Iqtidar Husain begins with a discussion of his family and his early life in Aligarh (India). Husain goes into detail describing the house and the neighborhood in which he lived. He then discusses his education, which began as home schooling and then later changed to Government School in Aligarh (India). Husain also talks about the escalation of tensions between Hindus and Muslims in 1947 as the result of Indian independence and the Pakistan movement. He talks about his father's involvement in the United Kingdom's Cabinet Mission of 1946, in which he represented Muslims in a discussion about Indian independence. Next, Husain briefly talks about the social atmosphere of Aligarh (India) in the late 1940s before addressing a reversal of fortunes brought about by his grandfather's death. Husain discusses his religious education at length, as well as his father's conversion to Shiite Islam and its effect on the family. Finally, Husain goes into detail about his family's migration to Pakistan and his early years in Lahore (Pakistan).
