Interview Summary

Governor Wetherby recalls his gubernatorial campaign in 1951, his early predictions of victory, election victorynight, and the inauguration day. He speaks of his Lieutenant Governor, Doc Beauchamp, and their relationship both professionally and personally. He speaks of the 1955 election campaign and the loss of his favored candidate against A.B. Chandler. Wetherby discusses his strong relationship with the legislative branch during his time as governor, as well as his relationship with Senator Clements. Gov. Wetherby tells of the Democratic Party's strength during the early 1950's. He recalls the issue of Strip Mining in Kentucky during his term and compares it to the Strip Mining industry today, as well as his efforts to prevent perjury on election ballots. Wetherby ends this interview speaking of his propositions dealing with Child Welfare and mental health.
