Interview Summary
Karl B. Raitz discusses how he discovered geography; his studies and professors at the University of Minnesota, where he obtained his bachelor’s, master’s, and Ph.D. degrees (1963-1970); how he got to the University of Kentucky (UK) in 1970 and made his career there; his mentoring and teaching style and philosophy; the role of serendipity in his professional trajectory; the process for selection of new faculty in the UK geography department; and the development and content of and teaching methodologies for the four main classes in human geography he taught at UK: Introduction to Human Geography, American Landscapes, Map Interpretation (interpreting topographical maps), and United States and Canada (regional geography).
