Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Megan Drake-Pereyra served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Dominican Republic from 2006 through 2008 in the Health Program. Megan recalls coming upon a book about Peace Corps in her high school library that triggered her interest. Megan’s group trained in Santo Domingo, and El Callejon de Cabrera. Her assignment was in four communities on the road from Jarabacoa to Pico Duarte, and she lived in Mata del Limon, near Manabao. Megan’s job was to create a sustainable Health Promoter program, focused on HIV/AIDS, sanitation, hygene, and basic healthcare. She appreciated that Peace Corps allowed her to adapt her work to focus on needs identified by the community. One project was the introduction of clay stoves, which led to a cottage industry. She took advantage of grants, including Peace Corps Partnership, and local fundraising, to implement projects. Megan credits her Peace Corps experience with helping her get her first two jobs after returning to the U.S.. She continues to work in Public Health.
