Interview Summary

Shelby begins the interview by discussing her childhood, as well as the influence of music upon her writing. Shelby's education is summarized, from elementary school to undergraduate college years. Subsequently, the interviewee's first and second marriages are explored. Then, Shelby's identity as a writer and enrollment in graduate school are illustrated. The interviewee's writing during this time is also considered. Following this, Shelby's publishing history, goals for writing, the illustration of children's books, and the writing of children's books are examined. Additionally, Shelby's experiences with playwriting are relayed. Next, teaching creative writing and the nature of creativity are contemplated. To conclude the interview, Shelby talks of her writing schedule and career, advice for new writers, the writing process, future writing projects, and her son.
