Interview Summary

This interview is with Salahuddin Chowdhury, a professor at Aligarh University and president of the Aligarh Old Boys' Association. It begins with Chowdhury talking about his early life in Silet, a village in what is now Bangladesh. He discusses his familial background and briefly talks about his religious education. Chowdhury then moves on to talk about his life as a student at Aligarh Muslim University, as well as India in general in the late 1940s. He talks about his reaction to the independence of India in 1947. Chowdhury also talks about his various travels to places such as Scotland and the United States. He talks at length about his involvement in the jute industry, representing farmers who cultivated this fiber. Chowdhury then moves on to talk about his family and marriage. He also talks about the relationship between East Pakistan and West Pakistan, which would later split into the countries of Pakistan and Bangladesh. He talks about the effects of the Bangladesh Liberation War. Finally, Chowdhury discusses his experiences in Aligarh Muslim University, including playing on the basketball team.
