Interview Summary

French talks about her writing and how it has been influenced by her identities as an African American, a mother, as someone who identifies as queer, and as someone from Louisville, Kentucky. She talks about the extent to which she feels like a Kentucky writer and mentions the disconnect she feels with that identity. She also talks about her experiences attending Howard, Emory, and Indiana Universities. She mentions how working at a private school, becoming a mother, and losing her father have influenced her writing. Finally, she concludes with advice for young writers and a contemplation about the significance of a Kentucky African American heritage.
