Interview with Oksana Shabas, June 6, 2023
Project: Peace Corps: Host Country National Oral History Project
Interview Summary
To Shabas, Peace Corps has always been a part of her life. After spending a year studying in the US, she began as a pre-service training language and culture trainer while completing her degree. She found that Peace Corps is “where my heart is,” moving into a program assistant position and, then, into that of regional manager. Because of the Russian full-scale invasion in Ukraine, Shabas took a temporary assignment to assist a Peace Corps program in Sri Lanka from which she learned first-hand what it is like to live away from home for a long period of time, as well as learning that she’s flexible and adaptable. Shabas says that Peace Corps helps others to see possibilities in their lives, empowering them to change their lives; to her, Peace Corps is “catalyst for change” in others. As a result of working for Peace Corps, Shabas views herself as a servant leader in an organization that’s needed worldwide as never before.Interview Accession
