Interview Summary
Mary Edna Berry grew up on Illinois Street in Kinkeadtown, a former Black neighborhood in Lexington, Kentucky. In this interview she describes in detail her family's houses, yards, and the neighborhood itself. She discusses how the neighborhood changed over time. She talks about her father's shoe repair business on Deweese Street, where her family bought food, and the stores they could not patronize. She talks about healthcare during her childhood, and discusses the types of jobs available for African Americans.Interview Accession
