Interview Summary

Lilia Garrison was born in 1908 and grew up in Kinkeadtown, an African American neighborhood in Lexington, Kentucky. In this interview she describes her family background, her parents' education, occupations, and religion.

Garrison describes Kinkeadtown in great detail, including the houses, her neighbors, and the values shared by the community. She talks about the origins of the community, named after abolitionist George Kinkead. She talks about living in the neighborhood before they had indoor plumbing or electricity. She talks about where her family shopped in Lexington and the places they were not allowed to go because of their skin color.
