Interview Summary

Armstrong, a long time resident of Etowah, Tennessee, remembers her life and childhood in the small town. She talks about life during the Great Depression and how the family survived. Armstrong's mother learned to cook a gourd that grew in abundance in the area as means to get food. Armstrong herself as a child would wash dishes for the Todd family for 50 cents a night. The Todd family owned almost all the land in the area and they sold Armstrong her house and the farm she still lives in. Armstrong also talks about the children of today and how she is worried that families aren't taking enough time to nurture their children, resulting in violent teens and adults. She finishes the interview by explaining how she takes a positive can-do attitude to life and as an 83 year old lives like she's not a day older than 21.
