Interview with Don Boileau, August 25, 2022
Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Don Boileau served in South Korea, 1968-1969. After training in Arizona, he was assigned to Central Officials Training Institute in Seoul for two years. There he helped professors improve their English so they could go to the US/Canada for PhD's. His major contribution, Don said, was teaching English to the leaders of Korea’s Department of Forestry, using materials from Weyerhaeuser on reforestration and tree farms--he had spent three summers working for Weyerhaeuser. Visiting Korea recently, he saw standing forests.! Peace Corps (PC) gave Don leave to come home to deal with family illnesses. His “Korean sister” of his host family came to the US to live with his parents when he returned to Korea, to create a “family exchange.” Don said PC taught him the value of family. He advises, “if you want a complete education, spend 4 years at college and 2 years with PC.”Interview Accession
