Interview Summary

Lawrence Hager is the retired publisher and editor of the Owensboro Messenger and Inquirer who attended Centre College with Fred Vinson. Hager talks about Vinson wanting to go to Centre more than other schools. He mentions Vinson's family briefly. There is discussion about Vinson's identification as a "New Dealer" although he took the side of the American Legion against Franklin D. Roosevelt in legislation (the Economy Bill of 1933 and the Veterans' Bonus Payment of 1935). Hager gives a personal impression of the 1931 Kentucky Democratic convention leading into a discussion of Vinson's relationship with A. B. "Happy" Chandler. He talks about how the Kentucky congressional delegation was attacked by the Louisville Courier-Journal over their stand on the veterans' payment legislation. Vinson's relationship with Sam Rayburn is discussed.
