Interview Summary

Alexander, Dowdy, Hunter, and White were members of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union (ILGWU). This interview was conducted at the headquarters of the ILGWU Philadelphia branch.

Hattie Alexander was born in 1900 outside Greenwood, SC. She came to Philadelphia in 1917. After her father died, she returned to SC briefly before returning to the city. She worked in the garment industry for many years and received her High School equivalency degree in 1977 at the age of 77.

Annabelle White was born in rural South Carolina. She came to Philadelphia from Jacksonville, SC in 1925 with her family after her father fled home when, having asked for his wages in cash at a sawmill, was told he would never live to spend them.
