Interview Summary
George E. Reedy, former press secretary to President Lyndon B. Johnson, discusses how he first met Earle Clements and what his first impressions were. He discusses Clements as a governor and senator. He talks about the Democratic National Conventions of 1952 and 1953, as well as the 1952 Congressional election. Reedy discusses Clements' close relationship with Lyndon Johnson and discusses their similar political styles, and discusses Clements as Democratic Whip and Lyndon Johnson as Minority Leader. Reedy discusses Clements' views on and work towards integration. He talks about Clements' defeat in the 1956 election by Thruston Morton, and Clements' roles after his defeat, as executive director of the United States Senate Democratic Campaign Committee, Highway Commissioner in Kentucky in 1959, and in Lyndon Johnson's 1960 campaign.Interview Accession
