Interview Summary
Volunteered for U.S. Army; trained at Camp Clayburn-- Louisiana; attended diesel mechanic school; served in 964th Engineer Maintenance Battalion; describes trip across the Atlantic (convoy system-- sea sickness); assembled bulldozers in England; discusses "ack ack" girls (British women who manned anti-aircraft guns); duty in France - drove truck carrying bridge erectors (material needed to cross the Rhine River into Germany)-- guarded warehouse filled with German treasures; reassigned to 698th Field Artillery (240mm howitzer unit); served with the army of occupation (enforced curfew in Germany); discusses German/American GI relations and black market trading.Interview Accession
