Interview Summary

Emmett Shultz came to the University of Kentucky in 1917 and graduated in 1921. In this interview he discusses his decision to attend UK and his first impressions of the university. He talks about majoring in engineering and discusses some of his professors. He talks about university president Frank McVey.

Shultz talks about social life on campus. He discusses the students' behavior, including pranks and hazing. He talks about the lack of interest in politics on campus at the time. He discusses the effects of World War I and the 1918 Influenza Epidemic on the campus, and discusses the role of women as faculty and students. He talks about the role of athletics at the university. He discusses how his college education influenced him, and how the education system has changed since his graduation.
