Interview Summary

Mary Broughton describes growing up on Mills Creek. Her father was killed in a railroad accident when she was one and her mother raised her and her four siblings. Mary went to school at Mills Creek then Dewitt and then Knox Central. She married Ernie Broughton when she was 17. Mary recalls her mother working in the garden and keeping livestock when she was growing up. She tells how her mom would make her and her siblings take medicine and how her mom once had to get her teeth pulled but did not have a car. Mary remembers her mom canning and cooking garden food. Mary worked sewing at a factory, babysat her grandchildren, and worked for the school system. Mary tells of getting medical services from the Lend-A-Hand Center and participating in the Grow Appalachia Gardening Program. She thinks the Center has been important for the community. Mary discusses issues, representation, and opportunities for the community. She is proud to be from the Creek. She thinks that people do not put out gardens like they used to and is hopeful for a good future for Stinking Creek.
