Interview Summary
William Marion Metcalf served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He talks about his schooling and where he lived before he was drafted into the military. Metcalf talks about the long trip to Okinawa on a ship and what accommodations they had in Okinawa. Metcalf talks about his life in the army, what the land and weather was like in Okinawa, how he kept in touch with his family, what they ate, and the people he kept in touch with from his service. Metcalf also tells a story about a close call where he was almost killed during his service. Metcalf talks about his life after he was discharged. He talks about getting married and having two kids, and having multiple jobs throughout the years. Metcalf talks about his experiences with typhoons in Okinawa, Japan and the destruction they caused.[Tape occasionally skips throughout this interview due to an issue with the recording equipment.]
