Interview Summary

Jesse Neack is a veteran of the Iraq War, serving in the army. In this interview, he discusses his childhood, his family, his decision to join the army in high school, his involvement in the delayed entry program, his basic training, Advanced Individual Training and airborne school experiences, his assignment to Fort Richardson, Alaska, his return home after two years there, and his reenlistment with the army. He remembers his experiences on September 11th, 2001, his attending ranger school while waiting to be deployed, traveling to Kuwait, the convoy into Iraq, fighting insurgents in Najaf, the problems caused by the rules of engagement, the difficulty of picking out insurgents from regular Iraqi civilians, his missions doing route reconnaissance, his combat experiences, and how he was injured during a mission in Mosul. He also describes the time that he spent in the hospital afterwards, his return to the United States, his decision to leave the military, his decision to attend college, and some of his college experiences. He also gives his thoughts on the end of the Iraq War.
