Interview Summary
Ches Shearer, a former college football player at Centre College under Happy Chandler, begins the interview by describing Chandler as a coach, and how he and Chandler ended up at Centre. Chandler's persuasive nature and loyalty, and inspirational qualities are emphasized. The successes of the Centre College football teams that Chandler coached are detailed. Shearer also discusses some of Chandler's habits. Additionally, Shearer compares modern college football to his playing days in the 1920s. The interviewee also talks of coaches today and their methods compared to Chandler. Chandler's golf abilities are briefly mentioned. Shearer then lists some of the triumphs of Chandler as the governor of Kentucky. Chandler's efforts to arrange a football game between Centre College and Harvard are described. Shearer recalls his involvement in the decision to cut Centre College's football program.
